10 Questions with Pati Palmer

Here's a short bio about Pati.  She is the president of Palmer/Pletsch Publishing and has been teaching sewing for 37 years.  She conducted seminars throughout North America and Australia for 15 years before establishing the Palmer/Pletsch International School of sewing in Portland Oregon where she now trains consumers and sewing educators.  She has authored ten books, is the editor/publisher of 20 more, 11 how to DVDs and the creator of eight Palmer/Pletsch sewing notions products.

Pati was wonderful to work with, her seminar was very informative, and she took a lot of time to individually answer questions during breaks from many attendees.  This is obviously her dream job.  One guild member was her demo model on the second day of the seminar.  Judy walked away with a fitted pants and top pattern that we're all looking forward to seeing how the clothes made from those patterns turned out.

1) When did you start sewing?  Pati: age 10

2) What was your favorite thing that you've sewn?  A three piece ultrasuede suit for my husband.  He only got to wear it once, and it was stolen from the hotel room in Atlantic City.

3) Have you ever given up on something you were sewing?   Yes, some double sided wool that kept growing every time it was pressed.

4) How many sewing machines do you own?  2 sewing, 1 coverlock, 1 serger

5) What is your biggest pet peeve with fashion sewing?  Making something just because it is a fad whether flattering on you or not.

6) What is your favorite cloth to work with?  Wool crepe.

7) Is there any type of clothing you particularly like to make?  Pants, pants, pants.

8)  What are you working on now?  I have a few piles of fabric coupled with one of my McCall's patterns, thread, interfacing, buttons etc. all ready to continue to look at and hopefully sew a couple of the piles.

9) What is the one thing that would improve a wardrobe the most?  Knowing your best colors and sticking to them. Having your colors done by a qualified color consultant is a huge help.

10) Make up question you want to be asked, give the answer. What do you feel contributed most to your success?  High School debate. My partner and I were state champions for Montana and went to the nationals in 1964.
