10 Questions with Marsh McClintock

I picked Marsha’s class without knowing much about her, just that she’s the Saf-T-Pockets woman.  By the last day of classes at the convention, I was beat, and even briefly considered going back to my room for a nap.  I’m very glad I didn’t do that.  Marsha is a fun teacher, and full of very practical advice.  The class never seemed like a lecture, more like a conversation with a friend while packing for a trip.

Marsha McClintock, owner of SAF-T-POCKETS Patterns and Sew Many Options Tours.  She started sewing at 12, made most of her clothes in high school and college, and was a custom dressmaker for 15 years before starting to take women on sewing and fashion tours.   Marsha purchased SAF-T-POCKETS in 1998 and still enjoys designing a line of patterns with hidden pockets for everyday or travel.

1) When did you start sewing? age 12

2) What was your favorite thing that you've sewn?  It was a black and cream
stripe jacket where I pleated out the cream stripes on the yoke,
collar and cuffs.  I learned the technique from Roberta Carr during a
 couture class.

3) Have you ever given up on something you were sewing?  Yes, I
finally said "This just isn't working, goodbye" and threw it out.

4) How many sewing machines do you own?     6 machines

5) What is your biggest pet peeve with fashion sewing?  Not being able
to find a tool when I need it.

6) What is your favorite cloth to work with?  silk

7) Is there any type of clothing you particularly like to make?  Garments with lots of pockets.  I'm always trying to find another place to put a pocket

8) What are you working on now?   New samples of my SAF-T-POCKETS designs

9) What is the one thing that would improve a wardrobe the most? A great looking jacket

10) Make up the question you want to be asked, and give the answer.   Where is your favorite place to shop for fabric?      My favorite place is New York City.  I take women on sewing tours and New York is the greatest spot when you are looking for wonderful, unusual fabric.
