1:30 Registration and Refreshments
Presentation by Ephraim Olani, Executive Director of The Women’s Self-Sufficiency Program, Under One Roof.
Women’s Self-Sufficiency Program, “Under One Roof”teaches sewing and quilting to African immigrant and refugee women. The program’s goals are to provide African immigrant women with a marketable skill and meet their health and social needs. Quilting is a new skill for Africans – virtually unheard of in Africa. These African immigrant women may be the first in Minnesota to learn this craft! They love it and are very eager to learn.
Participants attend sewing classes 4 times a week. Classes are held in the Iris Park Building in St. Paul in a classroom equipped with 8 sewing machines. Instruction is provided by volunteer sewers, quilters, and fiber artists.
Quilting classes were added to the program in 2011. It is a unifying bridge between cultures and allows the women to be much more creative. They are learning to sew everything from bags and table runners, to full-size quilts. The women display and sell their sewn/quilted items at shows throughout the year. These shows offer excellent opportunities to get the women and their program out into the greater community where their work is appreciated and their sense of belonging and worth are elevated. Examples of their sewn/quilted items will be on display
3:00 Pin Cushion Swap
