Photos: Joynoëlle Workspace Tour & Discussion
It was a lovely evening to gather at the workshop of Joy Teiken at her space in south Minneapolis. This was a rare opportunity to get the inside scoop from the acclaimed Twin Cities designer. She has designed and sewn hundreds of bespoke wedding gowns. Joy is kept busy draping and constructing special event clothing-weddings, mother of the bride, ballgowns and a current project she is working on will be worn at an event in honor of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
She walked us through her journey to the present. She had been a teacher for a number of years and was presented with an opportunity to teach sewing to her students. She was not a seamstress herself at that time but learned along with her students. One thing lead to the next and she began creating millinery, then constructing clothing. It seemed she never shied away from a project.
Her creations are one of a kind. She no longer uses patterns. She drapes on her client and has a number of full form mannequins that she custom pads to duplicate their shape. Joy describes her style as sculptural. See the photos below to see the evidence.
Thank you, Joy for inviting us into your design studio. We sought inspiration and you provided it!
