Community Sewing

Need ideas?

Check out more project ideas from ASG.org and see what other chapters are doing with their local communities all over the country.

There are many ways that you can participate in charitable sewing projects. From making hats, mittens, and scarves for nearby grade schools to sewing quilts for hospitals and shelters. You can create as part of a Neighborhood Group project or make things on your own.

Giving back is a vital part of a full and rewarding life. Nothing is more fulfilling than using your skills and passion to contribute to the quality of life of others in need within your own community. Throughout the country, ASG has become synonymous with sewing acts of kindness.

Here’s how to get involved:

  • Community sewing events are generally scheduled quarterly and coordinated by Neighborhood Groups. September is usually a busy month for these events as it is National Sewing Month.

  • Events are open to all who would like to attend; you do not have to be an ASG member to participate.

  • Be sure to download and fill out your Community Service Report so we can keep track of all the amazing work that is happening in our community.

  • Contact the Rosemary, our Community Sewing Coordinator at community_service@asg-mpls-stpaul.org to participate and learn about upcoming projects. Also check the website front page for the latest news on events coming up.

Neighborhood Groups at Work

National Sewing Month
September 2023
Community Service Sewing

For Fairview ICU - completed 30 blanket kits of a variety of fleece, flannel and cotton while at the MN State Fair in August and at the Stitch and Chat Woodbury neighborhood group sponsored Sewing for Charity day in September.

At the St Paul/SE Suburbs neighborhood group sponsored Community Service day in September, 9 lap fidget blankets were completed.

At the Anoka/Ramsey neighborhood group sponsored Community Service day in October making 19 bags for the homeless. The blankets will go the CRU (an organization out of Minneapolis). In Minneapolis they have been seen used to carry bedding and personal items. They have a big pocket on the inside and a small one on the outside with velcro closure.

The Monticello neighborhood decided to make items for a bazaar held at Community United Methodist where the group meets. Eight people completed 11 zippered square pouches, 8 embroidered dish towels, 1 pillowcase, 1 table runner, 1 pair pot mitts, 3 chemo hats and several other items.

Baby Stitches

Our Stitch & Chat Woodbury Group made pillowcases and blankets to donate to Childrens’ NICU and the staff sent this adorable thank you note.

Sensory Mats

This is a lap-size quilt that provides sensory and tactile stimulation for the restless hands of little kids, elders or anyone who gets a settled feeling by keeping their hands busy. Many of our Neighborhood Groups have sewn and donated these.

Tiny Leggings

Our Maple Grove area group got together to make baby legwarmers for preemies. The Potato Head Project provided an easy pattern and our group made dozens of pairs to donate.

So Many Projects

Mittens and hats for distribution to area elementary schools, blankets for Project Linus, leggings for NICU preemies and tote bags to carry the belongings of people leaving stressful situations, our members donate their time, talents and materials to help where they can.

Masked Up

The Covid-19 pandemic was a hard time for everyone. Our members took to their sewing machines and got to work. Assisted living homes, hospitals, mental health facilities and others often accepted our donations with tear filled eyes and grateful hearts. We were happy to be useful.

Each one teach one…

Our Shoreview members partner with a local Girl Scout troop to share sewing skills that can bring a lifetime of joy by learning to sew for oneself and those in need.

These kids know the value of sewing skills

A group of local 4H kids got together with ASG for our annual Community Service Day and the Coon Rapids Community Cable News came to the site to check it out.
