Beginner Sewing Classes

An update from Pat, our Youth Education Coordinator:

Our classes started up again in March at Hopkins Community Ed.  Although we had offered several supplemental classes early in the year, such as memory pillows, fleece mittens and scarves, tote bags and baby blankets, the Beginning Sewing classes are by far the most popular.

Because the machines we had been using at the school were beginning to wear out, the education staff invested in four new Janome machines.  What a joy it is to have these in the classroom!  So far, we have not tapped into the wide range of capabilities available, but that will be in the future, no doubt.

Looking back since we started this partnership at Hopkins in 2022, almost 70 students who knew nothing, or very little, about sewing are on their way to discovering the joy of creating with fabrics.  We have taught 29 young people and 39 adults, both men and women.  It is fun to see the amazement on their faces when they hold up their finished pieces.  The classes for adults are full for April and May, but are hoping for more youth to register.

Thank you to the many assistants who have come in to help me.  You are priceless.

Our Chapter thinks you’re priceless, as well, Pat. We appreciate you bringing life to our mission statement, Advancing Sewing as an Art and Life Skill.
